MemberClicks vs Sembr: an honest comparison

MemberClicks vs Sembr: an honest comparison

MemberClicks is a real product with a long track record, and a chamber running it today is not running something broken. It holds 4.3 out of 5 across 469 verified reviews on Capterra, which is a better score than most software in any category earns at that volume.

So this is not a takedown. It is the comparison we would want if we were the ones evaluating, including the parts where MemberClicks is the better answer.

One thing to establish first, because it changed recently and it changes the analysis.

MemberClicks is now part of Momentive, and so is Wild Apricot

MemberClicks was acquired by Personify in December 2020. In January 2026, Personify itself was acquired by Momentive Software, creating a combined portfolio of roughly 37,000 clients that also includes Wild Apricot, A2Z Events and ThreeSixty.

That matters for a practical reason. Chambers shortlisting membership software often put MemberClicks and Wild Apricot on the same list as independent alternatives to each other. They now have the same owner. If your concern is the direction a platform takes after private equity consolidation, comparing those two does not diversify that risk.

It also means the product roadmaps are now decided in the same place, and portfolio companies with overlapping products historically converge or get repositioned. That is not a prediction about what Momentive will do. It is a reason to ask them directly what happens to MemberClicks over the next three years.

Where MemberClicks is genuinely strong

The feature set is mature. Two decades of association customers means the edge cases are handled. Committee structures, chapter hierarchies, complex dues schedules and job boards are all things MemberClicks has built because someone needed them.

Reviewers rate ease of use and support well. Across public reviews the consistent praise is that it is straightforward to operate and that support has historically been responsive. For an organization whose staff turn over regularly, that matters more than a feature list.

It is built for associations, not adapted from a CRM. Several competitors are general-purpose platforms with a membership layer. MemberClicks is not, and it shows in the workflows.

It suits larger and more complex organizations. If you have chapters, multiple membership classes with different renewal cycles, and a certification programme, MemberClicks handles that today. We do not, and will not pretend otherwise.

Where the complaints cluster

Public reviews are consistent about four things.

Price increases and add-on costs. Reviewers report frequent increases, add-ons that cost more than expected, and transaction fees they felt reduced the value. This is the most common theme.

Support that degraded. A recurring complaint is slow responses and replies consisting of pre-written help articles rather than problem-solving. Note the tension with the paragraph above: the same product is praised for support in older reviews and criticized in newer ones, which is the pattern that tends to follow an ownership change.

Performance. Users describe the system as slow at times.

Invoicing rigidity. Two specific complaints recur: open invoices cannot be edited, and a voided renewal invoice can put a member into a state where rejoining requires administrator intervention because they are outside their renewal period. If your organization voids and reissues invoices regularly, ask about this before signing.

Pricing, side by side

MemberClicks does not publish full pricing on its site, but enough is public to compare. Reported tiers start around $259 USD per month billed annually, with levels at roughly $3,108, $3,948 and $4,788 USD per year (Software Suggest, pricing aggregators). Setup and add-ons are quoted separately.

Factor MemberClicks Sembr
Published pricing Partial, quote for full Yes, on the pricing page
Cost About $3,108 to $4,788 USD per year $1,548 or $2,988 CAD per year
Currency USD CAD
Contract Annual term None, monthly or annual
Per-member or per-seat fees Tiered None
Payment processing Platform processor, fees reported as a complaint Stripe direct, at cost, zero surcharge from us
Data export Available, terms not published JSON, CSV and SQL, self-serve, free
Canadian data residency Not published Toronto, DigitalOcean
Owner Momentive, private equity backed Founder-built, no outside capital

Two notes on reading that table honestly. The currencies differ, so a straight comparison of the numbers understates the gap for a Canadian organization paying in USD from a CAD budget. And "not published" in the data residency row means exactly that. We could not find a public statement, not that the answer is bad. Ask them.

Where MemberClicks is the better choice

We would not recommend Sembr over MemberClicks if any of these apply.

You run chapters or a federated structure with separate rosters and dues flowing between levels. We do not do that.

You run a certification or continuing-education programme with credit tracking. Not something we have built.

You need a large ecosystem of existing integrations with association-specific tooling. A twenty-year-old platform has partners we do not.

You are a large association rather than a small-to-mid membership organization. Our design target is 75 to 400 members with one to three staff. Above that, the assumptions we made to keep things simple start to cost you.

Where we think we are the better choice

You are a Canadian organization that would rather not have a software line item that moves with the exchange rate.

You want to know the price before a sales call, and to be able to put a number on a board slide without a demo first.

You want no metric that increases the bill on its own. No per-contact counting, no per-admin-seat scaling. Add a staff member or grow the roster and the price does not move.

Being able to leave matters to you. Export everything in JSON, CSV or SQL from the dashboard, at any time, at no cost, including invoices, payments, event registrations and the audit trail. No notice period and no retention call.

You care about who owns the vendor, having watched the pattern that follows acquisitions in this category.

How to check any of this

Do not take our table for it. Send both vendors the same three questions in writing.

What is the total annual cost including setup, add-ons and payment processing. What triggers an increase. And what exactly happens to our data if we leave, in what formats, and at what cost.

The answers, and how long they take to arrive, will tell you more than this post does. Ours are on the pricing page and the data ownership page, which is where they should be.
