The member portal

Your members sign in without a password, because the ones who forget a password are the ones you most need to reach.

How a member gets in

They enter their email. They get a link. They click it and they are in.

No password to set, forget, or reset. For a membership organization this is the difference between a portal people use and a portal people ask you about.

Getting them started

Open a member and send a portal invite. That creates their portal identity and sends the sign-in link in one step.

You can do this one member at a time as people ask, or work through the roster. There is no obligation to invite everybody at once, and a member who has never signed in is not broken, just absent.

What a member can do in there

  • See and pay their invoices. The pay button takes a card and settles it.
  • Turn on autopay, and turn it off again themselves.
  • Register for events, and cancel a registration.
  • Update their own profile, so you stop being the change-of-address desk.
  • Browse the member directory, if your organization has one.
  • Use the community, once it ships. It is on the roadmap, not in the portal yet.
  • Ask for their data, or ask to be erased. Both are self-serve, and both land in your queue with a clock on them. See privacy requests.
  • Sign out everywhere, which signs out the device they are on as well as every other one. That is deliberate: a person clicking sign-out-everywhere has usually lost a phone, and leaving the current session alive would be the wrong answer.

On a phone

The portal installs to the home screen. It gets an icon and opens without browser furniture, so it behaves like an app without anybody visiting an app store or waiting on review.

Members do not have to install it. It is a normal website first.

Lapsed members keep it

A member who is behind on dues can still sign in, still see what they owe, and still pay it.

Locking somebody out of the portal on the day they go overdue removes the one place they could have fixed it. Access ends at cancelled, not at lapsed.

What the portal is not

It is not a second admin panel. A member sees their own records and nobody else's, and that is enforced at the database rather than by remembering to filter a query. There is no view in the portal that can be talked into showing another member's invoice.

Next: the community layer, on the roadmap.

Members talking to each other, not just to you.
